Outreach programs

Eka has been pioneering collaborative programs with couple of organisations.
Following are some of our outreach programs.
a) February-2018: -
1) Awareness sessions at Samarthanam Trust for the Disabled, in HSR Layout.
The session was presented by both the trustees: Sharmila Jois Vellal & Santhi Karamcheti. Samarthanam is a not for profit trust for disabled and underprivileged citizens where the focus is to enhance the educational, social-emotional and cognitive skills.
The workshop conducted by Eka was on Behaviour management of Special needs children. The workshop gave them an understanding of what is behaviour, identifying desirable and undesirable behaviour and understanding different forms of reinforcement and other management techniques.

2) Workshop held at Karnataka Parent Association for Mentally Challenged Citizens (KPAMRC), Bangalore.
The Session was presented by Co-founder, Santhi Karamcheti. Started in 1978 by few parents of persons with intellectual and developmental disabilities, KPAMRC has been one of the pioneers in educating the Special Educators. They started their courses on Teacher Training Programmes in understanding and training disabilities such as Mental Retardation, Learning Disabilities and Autism and have been providing their courses for the past three decades.

Eka’s Workshop at KPAMRC was to help special educators understand inclusive education and multiple disabilities. In the inclusive education session, the special educators were briefed about how an inclusive classroom should be, the requirements specified by UNESCO, what inclusive education truly is- which is the inclusion of children from various backgrounds under one roof, underprivileged, tribal, disabled, migrant workers, etc. The most important part of the session being educating the competencies of an inclusive teacher, on how to accept every child for what they are.

b) March, April & May-2019: -
1. Short term courses - Baking, Sustainable Gardening & Photography
A month-long program in specific vocational training which is adopted by the National Institute of Open Schooling (NIOS). The courses introduced were Baking, Photography and Sustainable Gardening & subject support was rendered for students appearing for NIOS secondary & senior Secondary Privately. For the upcoming year, we intend to include more courses in stitching, modelling, pottery, etc.
2. 2-days workshop for teachers of NGO- U & I :-
U & I is an NGO that works for underprivileged group. They have various programs which include a scholarship for school going students and care for the mentally challenged population who are in government homes which include engaging them in productive work. The two-day workshop at the U & I included:
i.)creating awareness about different disabilities, 
ii.) five domains-physical, social, communication, cognitive and
iii.) behaviour management and classroom management
iv.) managing resources and resource development and sensitizing the teachers working with mentally challenged boys, girls, and adults residing at Government-run homes. 

EkaTalks

  • Audio-Visual talks & inspirational speeches, interviews of PwD & their families about their success stories, journeys, etc create motivation, awareness, and inspiration, is the whole idea of EkaTalks.

    As a part of World Autism Awareness Day-2019, Eka has interviewed our esteemed advisory board member Asha Sreedhar. Asha works as quality associate with SAP Labs from the past 3 years. She was part of the ‘Autism at Work’ training program with Enable India. She has an Associate of Applied Science Degree in Office Administration with a Medical Administrative Assistant Specialization and graduated with Phi Theta Kappa Honors. She has worked in the past with different job roles like file clerk, front desk administrative, document imaging specialist, host, and room service operator in clinics and hospitals. She has completed formal training on Manual Testing, Automation Testing, and Telecom Testing.

Ms. Shubha Girish- Chartered Accountant with Law and Management qualifications, a Professional with more than two decades of varied experience

Mr. Ramesh Susarla-32 years of work experience as a journalist, currently Editor in one of the reputed daily newspapers.

Ms. Varsha Iyengar-Lawyer and founding partner at Arka Law, based in Bengaluru.

Mr. Aditya Tiwari-Assist Vice President in an International Bank in India, he is the Founder of Avnish Social Welfare Society.

Mr. Aditya Kolisetti- Student from an international school.

Ms. Asha Sreedhar- part of the ‘Autism at Work’ training program with Enable India, currently works in SAP labs.


Various programs offered

Eka offers various programs pertaining to requirements of children & adolescents with special needs. Following are the programs offered:

·     School-Readiness Program

    This is a program for students aged between 6-14 years. This program comprises of a perfect blend of Academics along with Dance, Music, Theater, Sports, Yoga, Meditation, cooking, Housekeeping, Art, Craft, Computers & Technology, etc. 

Timings: 9:00AM-3:00PM
Days: Monday-Friday
Months: June-March
Teacher:Student ratio:- 1:3 as average. 

·     Pre-vocational & Vocational Course

This is a 2-years full-time course for adolescent 14 years and above and includes training the student in attaining pre-requisite skills for managing their career such as work-place etiquette, social behavior, personality development, self-advocacy, problem-solving ability, etc. It also focuses on training the students for the chosen vocation in the second year which is derived after much consideration into student’s profile which includes their aptitude, interest and personality. 

Eka’s Pre-Vocational and Vocational course aims at setting the standard by ensuring job placement at the end of two years. The student are put under probation for 6 months where they are carefully observed and monitored while they settle into their new work-place environment. This program is the first step Eka takes in making their vision of inclusion in the workplace a reality.

·       NIOS coaching- Preparatory, Secondary and Senior Secondary

No children should be denied education, then why should our special needs young adults be kept away from showing their strength. NIOS coaching, for Adolescents 14years and above,  not just includes tutoring for Secondary but also Senior Secondary level. For children 12 years and above who are attempting NIOS for the first time, we have introduced Preparatory period of 1 year where they are exposed to NIOS syllabus to help the student understand the process and format of NIOS. The coaching is done for subjects such as Psychology, Social Studies, English, Home Science, Painting, baking and many more. The program also intends to guide the parents in approaching the NIOS curriculum and procedure in a smooth and sequential manner. The guidance includes Subject choice, syllabus break-up, examination order, guidance in filing of the application for examination, etc.

·       Short courses:

The short term courses offered are carefully thought out program. For young adults with disabilities who are ready to acquire skills that they are interested in, the short term course is the best option. It is offered for young adults who are 14 years and above. The idea behind this program is to help enhance the skills of young adults with disabilities by focusing on just one topic. The syllabus includes theory, practicals and the entrepreneurial aspect of the chosen course. These courses could span from 1 month to 3 months depending on the depth of the topic of interest. It is available only during the time of Holidays such as summer and Mid-term holidays. Following are a few of the courses that are currently offered. To get more details about the course,

Eka aims at bringing corporate, industry, entrepreneur, entertainment, and small-scale sectors together for the cause of providing employment for the PwD. 
Eka enables support for families of PwD and make them capable and stronger who further guides other parents of PwD. 
Eka looks at the individual need of PwD and caters to his/her needs by accepting, encouraging and grooming their personality, interest and aptitude and making them responsible, confident and independent human being. 
Eka aims to help Young adults with special needs achieve pecuniary independence. 
Eka is here to give complete experience of school, college, and job with a smooth transition from one phase to the next.
